When a Death Occurs

When a death occurs in a family home, we are able to accept the person who has died into our care when the doctor has certified the death. As long as the doctor has seen the person at some time in the preceeding three months and is satisfied as to the cause of death, a death certificate will be issued and the doctor will advise you to contact your chosen funeral director.

In cases where the doctor is unable to sign the death certificate, such as unexpected deaths, the local police must be called and the Coroner notified. In these cases a "Government Contract" funeral director will transfer the person from the place of death to the hospital mortuary. However, the family of the deceased always has the right to select the Funeral Director of their choice. We are able to accept the deceased person into our care as soon as we receive authorisation.

It is important to remember that, no matter who may attempt to tell you otherwise, the choice of the funeral firm to conduct all necessary arrangements always remains the privilege of the family or the close friends of the person who has passed away.

When the death occurs in a hospital, nursing home or hospice, the nurse in charge will often help you with many of the formalities. You need to tell them of your choice of funeral director.

If the death occurs while travelling, we can arrange to bring the deceased person home. Australian Heritage Funerals can also arrange to have the decesed person sent back interstate or overseas if a visitor passes away while staying in this area.

In all cases, as soon as possible you should contact us to arrange the next steps.

"Everyone who attended Mum's funeral, a celebration of her 90 years / 7 months, found the service perfect and the chapel very peaceful - just what mum would have wished."
